Climbing Mount Kinabalu was a fantastic experience and a physically and mentally difficult challenge for unfit 40-something year olds.  Dez had also been ill for several days with a fever and night sweats.  He hadn’t had a lot of sleep over the previous nights, and he really struggled with exhaustion during the two day, Read More

A frightening thing happened yesterday. It was inevitable, and I’ve always known that I was going to have to do it at some point on the trip. In some ways, it was routine, something that I’ve done twenty times already in the last year. But this time it was different, and it’s left me, Read More

We’ve spent three days in Bako National Park, and it’s hard to imagine a more jurassic, a more alive, or a more astounding place in the world. As I write this, the tree canopy is swaying, signalling the early morning arrival of the local long-tailed macaque tribe on their breakfast foraging expedition, and the, Read More

To keep up the series of a post every couple of months about our travels and adventures, I started writing this a month ago whilst we were lounging around in lovely Laos. Suffice to say, I was too horizontal to ever get to the end of it, and what I’ve written clearly suffered, Read More

We’re two hours into a six hour minibus journey in the mountains of Northern Laos, on our way to Nong Kiaow, and I’m trying to take my mind off the smell of vomit by listing all the things I hate about backpacking.   Evan, our slightly travel sick nine year old, has thrown up, Read More

The Lonely Planet book describes Mandalay as ‘hot, busy and not immediately beautiful’ and then goes on to mention the pagodas, churches, Indian temples and mosques, and the monasteries and craftwork shops “amid the central grid of lacklustre concrete-block ordinariness”. Personally, I think guide books sometimes miss the point.

How time flies.  It doesn’t seem two minutes since I was sat on a beach in Agonda musing about how much we’d done since we left Portsmouth, and now we’re rapidly approaching the half way point in the trip.

Before we go any further, I have to say that I haven’t found travelling in Sri Lanka to be the most rewarding experience of the trip. I’ve found it lacking in culture, history and identity, and the food is generally rubbish. I think that the whole country is overly expensive, and that it has all, Read More

India is a country of highs and lows.   You’ll love it, hate it, or sometimes both at the same time.  I’ve backpacked through India several times, with Floss and with the kids, and I’ve worked there too, but this time was different.  We’ve been to Agra, Delhi, Varanassi and Jaipur.  All awesome in their, Read More

We’ve been away for two months now, which seems an appropriate time for a bit of reflection. In the time we’ve been away, we’ve climbed high into the Himalayas, rafted down rivers of glacial meltwater and slept under the stars in a desert with a flatulent camel named (by the children) Hindenberg.
