Sailing on a traditional Oruwa fishing boat, Sri Lanka :: VIDEO

traditional fishing boat in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan fishermen traditionally use Oruwa fishing boats, high-sided wooden canoes with outriggers and a square sail.  These are still used today as some of the shrimp fishing grounds around Negumbo are still reserved for traditional sailing boats only.   The sail is used to pull a shrimp net over the fishing grounds.

During our backpacking adventure in Asia, we joined the locals for their New Years Eve celebrations on the beach in Negumbo.  During an interesting evening on the beach with thousands of excited Sri Lankans, we booked an early morning trip on one of these traditional Oruwa fishing boats.

The boys absolutely loved it and Dez is very happy with his choice of soundtrack for the video. Bless him. He’s so special.
